Samsung Will Not Make LCD Screens Anymore

Samsung Display is set to abruptly shut down its LCD manufacturing business next month.  The Korean tech company had earlier scheduled a shutdown in December this year, but now it's happening in late June.

Insiders revealed that competition for Samsung was fierce and the company wanted to avoid further losses.

Going forward, Samsung Display will focus on manufacturing OLED and Quantum Dot (QD) panels, and all LCD suite employees are expected to move into the QD business.

Previous reports from Display Supply Chain Consultants revealed that the price of LCD panels was only 36.6% of the price used in 2014, which was the highest in their production period.  Chinese monitor maker BOE and AU Optronics from Taiwan also offer lower prices to customers.

Samsung originally planned to shut down its LCD business in 2020, but the shutdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic has increased the need for home entertainment on cheap devices like cheap TVs and smartphones.  For this reason, Samsung had to postpone this important step.

Samsung officials have not yet responded to a request for comment, but we expect to learn more about the financial implications of the shutdown through its second-quarter earnings report in July.
