Pakistanis linked to 2020 Charlie Hebdo attack arrested in Italy

ROME - In a significant development on Tuesday, Italian anti-terrorism police and Europol arrested some Pakistani suspects in connection with the 2020 attack on the French magazine Charlie Hebdo.

The operation resulted in the arrest of "Pakistani nationals in Italy and abroad, directly related to Zaheer Hassan Mahmood, who attacked two people with a knife."

Italian police say Mahmoud's attack comes just weeks after the magazine republished controversial sketches of the Prophet Muhammad.

He did not say how many people were arrested.

The European Counterterrorism Center in Europol coordinated the operation with the French and Spanish counterterrorism police, according to police in the northwestern Italian city of Genoa, where a judge sentenced 14 people to life in prison for "international terrorism".  Arrest warrants have been signed.

The local newspaper Il Secolo XIX in Genoa reported that "at least eight arrest warrants have been executed in Italy against members of the Islamic extremist network."  Who were planning attacks.
