Facebook Wants to Open a Local Office in Pakistan

Meta Facebook, the most popular social networking company, wants to set up a local office in Pakistan.  Company representatives are talking to FIA Director Humayun Bashir.

During the 3.5-hour meeting between Facebook correspondent Michael and FIA director Bashir, various issues were discussed.  The manager explained that setting up a local office in Pakistan is as important for Facebook as any other South Asian country, including India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

He expressed Pakistan's concerns over Facebook's refusal to publish information about users who spread hatred against Pakistan and its institutions.  The Facebook official said the company was sharing information with the Pakistani government regarding child pornography and terrorism.

However, he said that with the establishment of a local office in Pakistan, he would be able to share information widely.  According to the official, Facebook will contact Pakistani authorities to open an office in the country and the next meeting will be in July to discuss the matter.

During the PTI era, Science Minister Fawad Chaudhry had already urged technology companies, including Facebook, to set up local offices in Pakistan.  This is because the new electronic laws in Pakistan require social media companies to open permanent offices and comply with local laws in the country.  These laws were introduced in October 2021.
