Cameras are one of the most important aspects of smartphones these days, so it eliminates the need to carry additional cameras.  100MP is the highest resolution a smartphone camera has, but Samsung has now introduced a 200MP image sensor.  The company has announced a new set of camera sensors for smartphones with a higher resolution than any other sensors on the market.  The ISOCELL HP1 200MP image sensor has 0.64µm pixels.  The 50MP ISOCELL GN5 uses Pro omnidirectional Dual Pixel technology with two photodiodes in a single 1.0µm pixel.

“Samsung is developing ultra-high-resolution pixel technologies to take high-resolution image sensors to the next level, with ISOCELL HP1,” said Duke Chang, Executive Vice President of Sensor Business at Samsung Electronics.  Breaking barriers and bringing the ISOCELL GN5 Ultra Fast Autofocus, Samsung will continue to lead the next generation of mobile imaging technologies.

The South Korean giant is expected to use the ISOCELL HP1 sensor in the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, which can support a resolution of up to 200MP.

It is based on the company's latest 0.64μm pixels.  The newly launched portable image sensor is for low-light photography, containing the all-new ChameleonCell technology.  It is a pixel bonding technology that uses a 2 x 2, four x four or full pixel layout depending on the environment.

In low-light conditions, the ISOCELL HP1 is recombined into a 12.5-megapixel image sensor with 2.56 µm pixels by simultaneously aligning 16 adjacent pixels.  According to Samsung, the brand new 2.56μm pixel is able to absorb more light and sensitivity, creating brighter and clearer images indoors or in the evening.

The sensor can capture 200 million pixels of ultra-high resolution mobile imaging in or out of well-lit environments.  In addition, Samsung's ISOCELL HP1 8K is capable of recording videos at 30 frames per second (fps) with minimal loss.  The sensor can also create up to 8 contiguous videos (7680 x 4320) up to four contiguous pixels without having to trim or scaling the full image resolution to make the resolution up to 50MP or 8192 x 6144.

On the other hand, the 50MP ISOCELL GN5 is the first 1.0µm image sensor with a Dual Pixel Pro camera.  This technology is a versatile autofocus technology that greatly enhances the autofocus capabilities.  This technology has two photodiodes within each 1.0 micrometer pixel of the sensor to detect pattern changes in all directions, the smallest in the industry.

Samsung's ISOCELL GN5 autofocus speeds up sharp images in all lighting conditions.  The mobile image sensor also uses Samsung's pixel technology to implement Front Deep Trench Isolation (FDTI) on dual-pixel products.  Without affecting the microscopic photodiode size, FDTI allows each photodiode to absorb and store more light information, improves the photodiode's full well capacity (FWC) and reduces cross-stacking within pixels.
