Govt Leaves Freelancers Waiting After Claiming to Invite PayPal to Pakistan

After the recent change of government in Pakistan, independent locals have taken to Twitter to claim PayPal for Pakistan.  It quickly became a trend on Twitter last month, and now it's happening again, with thousands reminding the government on PayPal.

According to our sources, the government was also considering inviting the payment gateway giant to Pakistan, but there has been no update on the matter since then.

Hisham Sarwar raised the issue again, which led to the Twitter trend.

#PayPalin Pakistan is trending on Twitter with around 7,000 tweets so far.  Not only that, but the "One Million Freelancers" are also trending separately, with more than 3,500 people reminding the Pakistani government of the large number of self-employed workers in the country amid the PayPal shortage.

These Twitter users highlight how Pakistan ranks fourth among the top 10 freelance countries in the world with millions of members in the community.  Not to mention that the country held third place on the list for a while and recently lost that spot to Brazil.

The growth rate of the self-employment market in Brazil is 48% while Pakistan is close to 47%.

As always, there were many memes with popular hashtags.

It is noteworthy that this is not the first time that Pakistanis have claimed PayPal on a large scale and it has not yielded any positive results.  PayPal declined the offer in 2015 and 2019 due to SBP's stringent regulatory restrictions and complex approval process.

Therefore, it remains to be seen whether we will see positive developments on this front.
