Smartphone Sales Dipped Below 100 Million for the Second Time in 10 Years

Smartphone sales fell again in May this year after a sharp drop in epidemics in 2020.  Although the decline was not as great as in 2020, it is the second time that sales have fallen below 100 million in the last 10 years.

Counterpoint Research says smartphone sales fell to 96 million in May.  This is a decrease of 4% over April and 10% over the same period last year.  Take a look at the chart below.

This is the second consecutive monthly decline of 96 million and there are several reasons for this.  Although supply chain issues have stabilized, the Russia-Ukraine conflict and the prolonged recession in China are holding back smartphone sales.  Global inflationary pressures are not helping either.

It is also a fact that China is still under a cowardly lockdown.  Smartphone factories are either completely closed or running at half capacity.  This has caused production problems for many Apple suppliers, which may delay the launch of the iPhone 14, but none of these reports have been confirmed yet.

The iPhone 14 lineup is expected to appear in October with the new iPads.  Looks like all the other smartphone launches are on the right track.  Several major launches are planned for this month and there has been no delay in sightings so far.
