How to Protect Yourself During a Heat Wave?

With temperatures reaching abnormal levels across the country, it is important to take precautions to protect your health and well-being.  Here are five ways to protect yourself from extreme heat:

1. Stay hydrated

Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you're not particularly thirsty.

2. Avoid going out unnecessarily.

When the heat wave is at its peak, it is advisable to limit the time you spend outdoors, especially during the hottest hours of the day.

3. Cover yourself up.

Protect yourself from direct sunlight when outdoors by wearing hats or caps that protect your face, neck, and ears from the sun's rays.  Carrying an umbrella can provide an extra layer of shade and help reduce the risk of sunburn or heat stroke.

4. Wear light colored clothes.

Choose loose fitting, lightweight and light colored clothing.  Light-colored clothing reflects sunlight and heat, keeping you cooler than dark-colored clothing, which absorbs heat.

5. Keep your windows closed

To maintain a cool home environment, it is advisable to close windows and curtains during the day when the sun's intensity is at its peak.
