US Supreme Court reverses five-decade-old verdict on abortion rights

NEW YORK - In a landmark decision, the United States Supreme Court overturned a nearly 50-year-old ruling that reaffirmed a woman's constitutional right to abortion.

In 1973, the Supreme Court in its landmark judgment recognized abortion as a constitutional right.  Known as Wade and has been the law of the land ever since.

Now, the court has ruled in its 6-3 decision that Roe vs Wade's decision to allow abortion between 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy is wrong, adding that the US Constitution does not allow abortion.  Rights are not mentioned.

"The constitution does not give the right to abortion; Roe and Casey have been vetoed; and the power to regulate abortion rests with the people and their elected representatives," the order said.

The Supreme Court's decision came as it was considering a case, Dobbs vs. Jackson Women's Health Organization, which was brought against the Mississippi abortion ban 15 weeks later.

The ruling officially violated the constitutional right to abortion.

The decision was sharply criticized by government officials and human rights groups.

President Joe Biden called it "a very serious moment for the United States."

The Supreme Court has clearly taken away the constitutional right of the American people, which they had already recognized.  They just took it.  Biden said in a statement:

She vowed to do everything possible to protect women's abortion rights, saying voting was the only way to ensure protection.

"Let me be very clear and unwavering: the only way we can protect women's right to choose and the balance that exists is for Congress to restore Wade's reservations as federal law.

"No executive action by the president can do that. And if Congress, it seems, lacks votes - now to do that, the vote, the voters need to be heard.

President Biden added: "This fall, we need to elect more senators and representatives who will redefine women's right to vote in federal law, and more state leaders to protect that right at the local level."  Will choose. "
