Pakistan, India exchange lists of prisoners, fishermen

ISLAMABAD - There are at least 682 Indian prisoners in Pakistan, while 461 Pakistanis are in Indian prisons, according to lists prepared by the two countries on Friday.

Islamabad and New Delhi exchange lists of civilian prisoners and fishermen in their respective custody under the provisions of the Consular Access Agreement, which allows neighboring countries to exchange lists of prisoners of war in their respective custody twice a year.

A statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the Pakistani government informed the Indian High Commission in Islamabad today a list of 682 Indian detainees, including 49 civilians and 633 fishermen.

New Delhi also showed the Pakistan High Commission in the capital a list of 461 Pakistani prisoners, including 345 civilians and 116 fishermen.

Competing nations often detain each other's citizens on various charges, including espionage.

Meanwhile, Islamabad has reportedly demanded the Indian government to release Pakistani nationals who have served their sentences.

Earlier this month, Pakistan released 20 Indian fishermen from Karachi's Malir district prison.  He was bussed to Lahore where he was handed over to the Indian authorities across the Wagah border.
