Vivo X Flip review

Vivo X Flip review - FutureInfo

Introduction

Is it folding season at FutureInfo or what?  It sure feels like it's raining phones that tilt in half left and right.  Here we have the X Flip, Vivo's first attempt at a clamshell-style phone.  No stranger to curved phones, the company is among the second generation of phone designs that transform into a tablet, but now with only the X Flip, Galaxy Z Flip and Motorola Razr to battle for the hearts of smaller phone fans.  is included.

However, there's a catch - the X Flip, like the X Fold2 and X Fold, won't release the chain.  So while we're happy to review it in our hands to see where Vivo stands against others in the field, the X Flip's viability as a potential purchase from a Western perspective is questionable at best.  Is.  But we'll go, anyway.

The X Flip Shell joins the crowd in what could almost be called its maturity, and as such, it does a few things on the first try - things Samsung is only willing to tackle with the Z Flip5.  The cover screen is the first of its kind, and it's a nice 3-inch unit that's not as big as the Razr 40 Ultra or Find N2 Flip, but still a lot better than Samsung's current unit.  The display inside also stands out from the start – a nearly wrinkle-free 6.74-inch LTPO OLED display with a well-tuned refresh rate.

While it's hardly an industry-leading camera phone—foldable devices don't usually come close—Vivo's X Flip has a very promising dual-core setup that has the potential to best the overall clamshell.  .  Let's hope they haven't messed up the cover screen implementation — we'll see.

Last year's flagship Snapdragon is in charge, as are the Razr 40 Ultra and Z Flip4, though the soon-to-be-released Galaxy S10 will feature the next-gen Snapdragon — but the X Flip's SD 8+ Gen 1 should be good enough.  .  , indeed.  The 4,400mAh battery sounds better than just 'good enough', although the lack of wireless charging is a drawback in an otherwise solid spec sheet.  Also missing is any mention of dust and water resistance, making the Galaxy the only Fold that can withstand being submerged in a bowl of water.

Vivo X flip unboxing

Our X Flip arrived in a large silver box that's more fancy than the Galaxy ships, though it's similar to the Find N2 Flip.  Inside, you'll find a two-piece protective cover with a particularly solid gold surround, a 44-watt adapter, and a USB-A-to-C cable.

Compared to other offerings in this area, we'd call it a standard package.  We will take this opportunity to use Galaxy again for retail package only.  While Vivo (along with its somewhat related counterpart from Oppo) may face some criticism for its overly large display, the Razr 40 Ultra is a middle ground for fitting everything you need into a reasonably sized box. The approach seems the most sensible.
