Motorola Razr 3 Set To Launch In July 2022; First Smartphone With 200MP Camera

Motorola will soon launch a new foldable smartphone in China - the Moto Razr 3.  It will be the first flagship to be launched with the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen1 SoC.  The device is expected to be a sequel to the Moto Razr 5G in 2020.  Now, reports are circulating that this could be the first smartphone with a 200MP camera sensor.

According to the teaser released by the company, the Motorola smartphone is equipped with a 200-megapixel camera sensor.  It is claimed to be the standard for image testing.  It is expected to start sometime in July.  In addition, it has been confirmed that the next foldable smartphone - the Moto Razr 3 may come with Qualcomm's flagship processor.

The 200MP camera sensor used by Motorola smartphones is the recently launched 200MP Samsung ISOCELL HP1 sensor.  It features OIS and is expected to come with a 50MP wide angle camera sensor, 12MP telephoto lens, and a 60MP selfie camera sensor.

Should Smartphones Use 200MP Sensors?

Interestingly, Samsung will not be the first brand to launch a smartphone with a 200MP internal sensor.  After Motorola, Xiaomi's branded phones could have a larger sensor in the second half of 2022, followed by Samsung in early 2023.  It seems that the Korean tech company wants to test other brands before introducing its flagship Galaxy 2023 smartphones.

It all sounds exciting but do we need a huge 200MP sensor mounted on the back of the smartphone?  In practice, the use of a 100MP sensor fails to provide a good overall camera.  Most large smartphone camera sensors lack good optics quality and struggle to deliver granular results.

Let's just hope Motorola makes some subtle changes to Samsung's 200MP camera sensor before introducing its flagship phone to the world.  The smartphone can enhance some eyeballs with its 200MP sensor, but it's realistic camera performance that makes a difference.  In particular, the software will play an important role in obtaining accurate results of such large sensors.  We can't wait for the sensor to be tested in the process.
